When Steel becomes Art - Venice, Great Alviani exhibition at Scuola grande della misericordia

January 13, 2023

With more than 150 artworks displayed this is the largest exhibition dedicated to the artist.

The exhibition “Getulio Alviani. Maestro della luce” has recently opened its door at Scuola grande della misericordia. After the Mayor’s introductions and those of the critics Luca Beatrice, Dora Fraglica and Carlo Vanoni, the violinist Olen Cesari played among an audience of collectors. This is one of the largest exhibitions dedicated to the artist from Udine that passed away in 2018. Alviani was a plastic creator, designer, theoretician, graphic, collector, cultural promoter and leading member of kinetic and arte programmata. His artworks are located in 66 international museums including MoMA and Smithsonian in New York, Lacma in Los Angeles, Kunstmuseum in Basel and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The exhibition proposes the most important stages of his artistic career through 150 artworks.

THE SUPERFICI A STRUTTURA VIBRATILE FROM THE SIXTIES REALIZED WITH STEEL
AND ALUMINUM USE THE OPTICAL INTERFERENCES GIVEN BY THE VISITOR MOVEMENT

We find the first Superfici a struttura vibratile from the Sixties realized with steel and aluminum and they use the optical interferences given by the visitor movement. The artist considered them “works that make up the basic, the foundational and fundamental resrarch to understand all the further developments”. From this series, more than 70 artworks are exhibited until the late 1970s. Then a dozen of Cerchi Virtuali dated 1967-1969 use the mirroring part to virtually complete the physical semicircle placed on the surface.

HE WAS A PLASTIC CREATOR, DESIGNER, GRAPHIC, THEORETICIAN AND LEADING MEMBER OF KINETIC ART

Then Interrelazioni Speculari (1962-1967) deepen the interruption and visual continuity relations using rounded aluminum bands that are parallels and alternates to each other. We also see two hard-to-find Cromostrutture speculari a elementi quadri dated 1964, the wooden and steel sculptures from the 1960s (especially Positivo-Negativo), different twanging texture surfaces from the 1970s; these represent prospective studies and others examine the relation between twanging texture and colors - on view artworks with yellow, red, blue and black background.

HIS ARTWORKS ARE LOCATED IN 66 INTERNATIONAL MUSEUMS INCLUDING MOMA IN NEW YORK
LACMA IN LOS ANGELES AND VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM IN LONDON

The exhibition path ends with the most recents Superfici e Cromie of the 1990s and 2000s and about fifteen jewels. In 1973, Palma Bucarelli, Galleria nazionale d’arte moderna di Roma director said: “In Modern Art the jewel has a new meaning. It is not only a naturalist or allegorical ornamentation, but it is the means with which the artwork sets itself in direct, physical contact”. Alviani jewels - an exception in kinetic and programmed art - offer an opportunity to present a less known production, but still interesting and fascinating.
