When art goes to church • Gravedona: In the baptistery of Santa Maria del Tiglio the last artwork by Elvino Motti

In the atmosphere of contemplation of the sacred place, the triptych Angeli e demone questions us

Creating in space is an art that Elvino Motti possesses to perfection, as if the living body of his sculptures married the transparency of air. It is this exercise that he has once again engaged in the triptych Angels and Demon carved into a material that seems to melt into the impalpability of the atmosphere, outlining itself in the contours of three slim silhouettes (two angels and one demon), whose diaphanous delicacy induces a filter between the visible and the invisible without disturbing vision.

The sculpture is often seen as an obstacle, both for its physical presence and for its materiality. Elvino, however, working on the translucent surfaces of the crystal skillfully shaped, delimits volumes that, certainly, are realized in their concrete reality but tend to fade, letting the light and the gaze penetrate, in a more graphic reading, all of illusion and nuance.

The translucent material reaches the spiritual dimension through the religious interpretation given by the artist to the 3 silhouettes

The fullness of the translucent material, which is methacrylate, often used in other works, reaches the spiritual dimension given by the religious interpretation that the artist has given to these three slim silhouettes. The fragility of the forms crossed by the light that seems to wave from inside is a condensed lightness and transparency, animated by the movements and subtle rhythms of a suspended space-time in a mythological confrontation between evil and the forces of good.

Here, as in the APOCALYPSE in the episode of the archangel Saint Michael, the angels triumph

Similar to living organisms radiating inner life, these works project their strength in a symbolic struggle that goes on from the eternity of time. The two shining angels, transfigured by the explosion of a blue directional light, frame the imprisoned figure of the fallen angel, the spirit of evil, which in a flaming red crystal almost in motion turns into a tortured body absorbed by the flames of hell. Here the angels triumph over evil, like the archangel Saint Michael and his legions who killed the Dragon, according to the writings of the Revelation. But this fratricidal war between the heavenly Angels never seems to end, evil even if in cage, still reigns, requiring every opportunity to be fought.

A condensed of lightness and transparency, animated by the subtle rhythms of a suspended space-time, makes you reflect on the forces of good and evil

This is the message of Angels and Demon. The modernity of the technique does not hinder the unchanging truth, the momentum of hope that the sculptures transmit, supported in this by the imposing sacredness of the place that welcomes them: the Baptistery of Santa Maria del Tiglio di Gravedona (Como). In this atmosphere of contemplation, the timeless spiritual message is joined, thanks to the sculpture by Elvino, a modernity that questions us.
